a. The Good News

The Good News for all!

 What is “the Gospel”?
The word gospel originates from the meaning of the New Testament Greek word evangelion (or evangellion) meaning “good news“. This meaning was transmitted literally into Old English as godspell, eventually becoming gospel. The gospel is summarized  by Jesus Christ in the following proclamation:

The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news. Mark 1:15

What is the “Good News”?
The good news is the proclamation of the redemption by Jesus.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. John 3:16-17

Jesus answered,I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12

Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4

I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.” Romans 1:16-17

What must a person “do” to be saved?

...And when the jailer had been roused out of sleep and had seen the prison doors opened, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Do yourself no harm, for we are all here!” And he called for lights and rushed in and, trembling with fear, he fell down before Paul and Silas, and after he brought them out, he said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you shall be saved, you and your household.” And they spoke the word of the Lord to him together with all who were in his house. Acts 16:27-32

The problem with man is we are all rebellious and sinful. King Solomon wrote:

“God made mankind upright, but men have gone in search of many schemes.” Ecclesiastes 7:29

The “what must I do to be saved” involves turning away from sin and accepting Christ which is repentance. All of us have broken Gods laws (sinned) and we must return to God. Jesus said:

I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” Luke 13:3

Jesus paid the price for your sin and mine!

In him (meaning Jesus) we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sinsEphesians 1:7

This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. Romans 3:22-24

“...if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be savedRomans 10:9

Jesus Christ is waiting for an invitation to come in to your life. In fact, he says:

So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. Luke 11:9-10

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come inRevelation 3:20

Is Jesus “the only way” for salvation?
Some will erroneously tell you that all religions are pretty much equal and will lead you to God. The Bible is quite clear that it’s all or none.

Jesus answered,I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

So Jesus said to them again, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. “All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. “I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”  John 10:7-9

[Jesus said] Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. “For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.
Matthew 7:13-14

[The Apostle Paul said] “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12

C.S. Lewis wrote in “Mere Christianity”:

I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: “I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.” That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic-on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg-or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher.”
